10 Tips About Home Gas Alarms

2025-08-19

Gas safety is closely linked to the well-being of every family, and home gas alarms, as “safeguards,” silently safeguard our lives. However, as professional instruments, there are many issues that require attention during installation and use. Mastering the following 10 core tips will help you uncover hidden gas leaks and build a solid defense for home safety.

  1. Choosing the Right Gas Alarm Type is Important

Home gas mainly includes natural gas, liquefied petroleum gas, and manufactured gas. Different gas alarms are designed for different types of gas, so when purchasing, you should choose the appropriate alarm based on the type of gas source used in your home. Chicheng Electric offers a variety of gas alarm models to meet the needs of different gas sources. When purchasing, simply select the appropriate alarm model based on the type of gas source used in your home.

  1. Installation Location Matters

Regardless of where the gas alarm is installed, the sensor should always face downward. The gas alarm should be mounted where it is easily visible and audible, and the display panel should face people directly, not from the back or side.

Gas alarms should be installed on indoor walls within 4 meters and 2 meters horizontally from gas appliances or gas sources in a well-ventilated area.

When detecting gases lighter than air, such as natural gas, the alarm should be installed 0.3-0.6 meters from the ceiling.

When detecting gases heavier than air, such as liquefied petroleum gas, the alarm should be installed 0.3-0.6 meters from the ground.

Note: Gas alarms should be installed away from the following locations:

  • Areas with high airflow, such as passageways;
  • Areas subject to mist or dripping water;
  • Areas near stoves that are easily contaminated by fumes, steam, and other pollutants, or in high-temperature environments (such as directly above the stove);
  • Areas obscured by other objects (such as inside cabinets);
  • Near vibrating objects, such as refrigerators and air conditioners.

  1. Continuous power is a guarantee

Home gas alarms must be continuously powered. Never unplug the power cord at night or when you are away. Frequent plugging and unplugging not only increases the energy consumption of the device but also poses a risk. If there’s a gas leak, plugging or unplugging the switch could cause sparks, potentially leading to a fire or explosion.

  1. Regular Self-Tests Maintain Sensitivity

Press the “self-test” button on your household gas alarm once a month to check whether the light flashes and the buzzer sounds normally. If the yellow light illuminates or there’s no response during the self-test, the sensor may be faulty and you should contact a professional immediately for repair.

  1. Cleaning and Maintenance Are Essential

Surface Dust Removal: If dust is noticeably visible on the surface of the gas alarm, gently wipe it with a damp, soft cloth (do not use a cloth that’s been wet). After cleaning, perform a self-test. Only reinstall and continue using it if it’s normal.

Environmental Controls: Avoid the use of irritants such as pesticides, perfume, and alcohol in the installation room to prevent false alarms.

  1. Interlocking Devices for Greater Security

Users should prioritize alarms with solenoid valve interlocking. When a gas leak is detected, the alarm automatically shuts off the gas supply, eliminating the risk at the source. Furthermore, home gas alarms with internet connectivity can simultaneously send alerts to users via phone, text message, or app. Users can remotely shut off valves and mute the alarm, preventing potential leaks before they occur.

  1. Replace the alarm promptly upon expiration

The typical service life of a home gas alarm is five years. After this period, the sensor’s sensitivity decreases significantly and may no longer be able to detect gas leaks. It is recommended that the device be replaced immediately upon expiration. Alternatively, a laser home gas alarm can offer a service life of up to 10 years.

  1. False Alarm Handling Methods

Common causes of false alarms include: kitchen steam, cooking fumes, sudden temperature changes, alcohol evaporation, and sensor failure.

How to Address These Problems: Choose a sensor with good anti-interference performance, install it in a suitable location, maintain ventilation during daily use, perform regular maintenance, replace it promptly upon expiration, and follow standardized procedures.

  1. Remain Calm in Emergency Response

What should you do if a home gas alarm sounds an alarm?

First, organize an evacuation as soon as possible. When a gas leak alarm sounds, residents should immediately evacuate to a safe area and avoid remaining in the room.

Second, shut off the gas supply and open windows for ventilation. If conditions permit and your own safety is guaranteed, quickly close the gas line valve to shut off the gas supply. Then, open doors and windows to increase air circulation and reduce the gas concentration indoors.

Finally, evacuate to a safe area and call for help. After evacuating to a safe area, call the local gas company’s repair number and clearly state the location and floor of the gas leak. If a fire occurs, call the fire department as well. If someone is injured, call emergency services. Also, prevent anyone else from approaching the scene.

  1. Choosing the right product is crucial

There are many brands of home gas alarms on the market, and the quality varies. When purchasing, consumers should look for reputable brands, comprehensive certifications, and guaranteed products. Effective July 1st of this year, home gas alarms must obtain 3C certification before they can be sold. Therefore, consumers should choose products with 3C certification.

Currently, Chicheng Electric’s alarm products, including its series of household combustible gas detectors, industrial and commercial combustible gas detectors, and combustible gas alarm controllers, have obtained CCC certification and are marked with the corresponding certification mark. This fully demonstrates that Chicheng Electric’s products comply with relevant national safety standards and technical specifications and meet the stringent market requirements. As a provider of gas environment safety products and system solutions, Chicheng Electric leverages 21 years of technological experience to build a comprehensive safety network covering the entire industry chain, including fixed and portable gas detectors, intelligent alarm controllers, household gas alarms, and a smart cloud platform.
