How to choose a detector when toxic and flammable gases are present at the same time?

2025-05-20

For environments where toxic and flammable gases are present at the same time, gas detectors can be selected according to the following standards:

① If the monitored object is both flammable and toxic gas, then only a toxic gas detector needs to be set.

② If the concentration of flammable gas may exceed 25% of the lower explosion limit, and the concentration of toxic gas may also reach the upper limit of the allowable concentration, then both flammable gas detectors and toxic gas detectors need to be set.

③ If the concentration of flammable gas may exceed 25% of the lower explosion limit, and the concentration of toxic gas cannot reach the upper limit of the allowable concentration, then only a flammable gas detector needs to be set. ④ If the concentration of flammable gas cannot exceed 25% of the lower explosion limit, and the concentration of toxic gas may reach the upper limit of the allowable concentration, then only a toxic gas detector needs to be set.

How to choose a gas detector in a toxic environment?

When choosing a gas detector, all possible situations should be considered. If there are toxic gases such as carbon monoxide and hydrogen sulfide, it is necessary to give priority to choosing a specific toxic gas detector to ensure the safety of personnel. If there are organic toxic gases (VOCs) that cause poisoning in low concentrations, such as aromatic hydrocarbons, halogenated hydrocarbons (amines), ethers, alcohols, fats, etc., you should choose a photoionization gas detector, and never use an LEL detector to deal with it, because this may cause personal injury.

How to choose a gas detector when entering a confined space?

Gas detection must be performed when entering a confined space, and the detection must be performed outside the confined space.

Oxygen concentration is one of the varieties that must be detected. It is necessary to select a portable gas detector with oxygen detection function to prevent hypoxia or oxygen enrichment, and a small size that does not affect the workers’ operations. In addition, after entering the confined space, the gas composition in it must be continuously detected to prevent changes in the concentration of volatile organic compounds or other toxic and harmful gases caused by personnel entry, sudden leakage, temperature changes, etc. Therefore, four-in-one and five-in-one gas detectors are often used.

Should small-area restaurants choose industrial or household alarms?

For small-area restaurants, many shops choose to install household gas alarms. Is this feasible? The answer is no, even for restaurants with a very small area.

① Different explosion-proof requirements: According to relevant national regulations, the shell of industrial alarms is generally cast aluminum explosion-proof; while the shell of household alarms is usually a plastic non-explosion-proof product. This is why even the smallest restaurants cannot use household alarms.

② Different functions: Household gas alarms can be linked to household solenoid valves and household fans; while industrial and commercial places need to be linked to large shut-off valves, exhaust fans and other equipment.

③ Different detection areas: The single detection area of industrial and commercial combustible gas detectors is generally around 20 square meters. Users can increase the number of detectors according to the area, while household combustible gas alarms are around 10 square meters.

④ Whether multi-point layout can be carried out: Industrial and commercial combustible gas alarms can also be arranged at multiple points according to detection needs, and centralized monitoring can be carried out through alarm controllers to achieve remote monitoring and management. The household version of the combustible gas alarm is just a simple single-point independent alarm reminder.

Gas detectors are professional instruments, so there is a lot of knowledge in choosing them. When choosing, users can consult the alarm manufacturer or relevant technicians to find a perfect solution!
